Calculate Your Body Fat Percentage
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy formula, which estimates body fat from a handful of body measurements. Choose your sex and units, then fill in your age, height, weight, neck, and waist. Women are asked for a hip measurement too. In return you get an estimated body fat percentage to compare with the reference categories further down the page. Accuracy depends on consistent technique, so follow the measuring steps below before you begin. Expect a reasonable approximation, usually within a few percentage points of a clinical test, and not an exact reading.
Estimate your body fat percentage using the U.S. Navy method.
ES (Essential Fat), AT (Athletes), FT (Fitness), AV (Average), OB (Obese)
Taking Accurate Measurements
A careless measurement gives a misleading result. Pick a flexible fabric tape, lay it flat on bare skin so it sits level and firm without digging in, and record each site two times. When the readings differ, take a third and keep the middle one.
Wrap the tape around your neck directly below the voice box, tilting it a little lower in front than in back. Stand tall, drop your shoulders, and avoid tensing.
For men, the tape goes around the abdomen at navel height. For women, it goes around the narrowest part of the waist. Exhale gently and take the reading with your stomach relaxed.
Women only. With feet side by side, circle the tape around the widest part of the hips and seat. Check in a mirror that it stays horizontal.
Remove your shoes and stand flat against a wall with heels touching and your gaze level. Mark the top of your head and measure down to the floor.
Body Fat Percentage Categories
These categories are published by the American Council on Exercise. They reflect averages across many people, so treat them as reference points and not as targets you must hit. Your ideal range depends on your age and how you train.
| Category | Men body fat % | Women body fat % | What It Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential Fat | 2 to 5% | 10 to 13% | Fat your body cannot do without. It supports hormone output, regulates body heat, and shields vital organs. Going lower is dangerous and should never be the aim. |
| Athletes | 6 to 13% | 14 to 20% | Usual for those in serious training on most days, with nutrition planned around performance. |
| Fitness | 14 to 17% | 21 to 24% | Lean, and realistic to keep up for people who stay active. A sensible aim for most. |
| Acceptable | 18 to 24% | 25 to 31% | The common range for healthy adults outside of sport. Good metabolic health is entirely possible at this level. |
| Obesity | 25% or higher | 32% or higher | Comes with elevated risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. Speak with a provider about your options. |

Body Fat Percentage vs. BMI
Most people on a weight loss program watch one thing: the scale. What matters more is which kind of weight is leaving. GLP-1 medications are effective at bringing weight down, but they do not choose fat over muscle on their own.
BMI is a ratio of weight to height and nothing more. Since it cannot distinguish fat from muscle, it may flag a strong, lean person as overweight. It may also give a normal score to someone with a risky amount of fat around the organs. Researchers find it handy for populations, but it is a crude measure for any one individual.
Body fat percentage shows how much of you is fat and how much is lean tissue. That breakdown drives metabolic health and hormone balance, and it should shape your nutrition and exercise. It is also the better progress marker. Your weight can plateau for weeks on a program even as you lose fat and gain muscle.
A body fat estimate tells you where you stand today. In a consultation, we combine it with your lab work, hormone testing, and medical history to map out realistic next steps.
