Calculate Your Lean Body Mass

Want a closer read on body fat? Our body fat calculator uses tape measurements and takes about two minutes.

Start by choosing your sex and your preferred units, then move the sliders to your height and weight. The calculator runs the Boer equation, which estimates lean body mass using only those details, and displays three results: lean body mass, body fat mass, and body fat percentage. Since nothing is measured, expect an approximation. Results tend to drift for bodybuilders, for people with obesity, and for older adults who have lost muscle. For exact figures, a body composition scan is the better tool. For a quick sense of what your weight is made of, this is a good start.

Body Fat Percentage:

In-Depth Info

Lean body mass is your total body weight minus your body fat. It includes your bones, organs, muscles, blood, and fluids.

Making Sense of Your Three Numbers

Your result comes in three parts. The first two split your body weight into lean tissue and fat, and the third expresses that split as a percentage.

  • 01. Lean Body Mass

Lean body mass is the weight of everything except fat. That means muscle, bones, organs, blood, and body water. Muscle is the largest piece you can change through training and diet, so lean mass works as a useful proxy for it. A drop in this figure during weight loss is a warning that muscle may be going too.

  • 02. Body Fat Mass

Body fat mass is what remains when lean mass is taken away from your total weight. On any weight loss plan, this is the number you want to see fall. Following it over several weeks is more revealing than the scale, which lumps fat and muscle together.

  • 03. Body Fat Percentage

Body fat percentage states your fat mass as a proportion of your whole body weight. It lets you compare yourself to standard ranges whatever your size. Because this calculator works from height and weight only, take the figure as a ballpark. Our body fat calculator relies on tape measurements and is usually closer.

Where Does Your Body Fat Percentage Fall?

Find the body fat percentage from your result in the table below. The categories are those published by the American Council on Exercise. Your lean mass is the remainder, so the lower your percentage, the more of your weight is lean tissue.

Body fat percentage ranges for men and women
Range Men body fat % Women body fat % What It Means
Essential Fat 2 to 5% 10 to 13% The baseline fat required for normal body function. Living at this level long term carries health risks.
Athletes 6 to 13% 14 to 20% Very high proportion of lean tissue, usually the product of frequent, demanding training.
Fitness 14 to 17% 21 to 24% A strong balance of muscle to fat, common among adults who work out consistently.
Average 18 to 24% 25 to 31% Typical for the general adult population. Adding muscle or losing some fat would move you up a category.
Obesity 25% or higher 32% or higher Fat outweighs what is considered healthy relative to lean tissue, raising the likelihood of metabolic and heart problems.

Lean mass share = 100% minus body fat percentage. Categories from the American Council on Exercise.

The Math Behind BMI

Only two measurements go into your BMI. Below you will find the equation, a short history of where it came from, and the things it leaves out.

  • 01. The Equation

With metric units, take your weight in kilograms and divide it by your height in meters multiplied by itself. With imperial units, take your weight in pounds, divide by your height in inches multiplied by itself, and multiply the answer by 703.

  • 02. A Brief History

The idea dates to the 1830s, when Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet created it to describe trends across whole populations. He did not design it to assess any single person. Medicine picked it up in the twentieth century for practical reasons: it is free, quick, and requires nothing more than a scale and a tape measure.

  • 03. Its Blind Spots

BMI treats every pound the same. It cannot see whether your weight is muscle or fat, or whether fat is stored around your organs. Athletes can score high with little body fat, and people with low muscle can score normal while carrying too much. Body fat percentage, waist measurement, and blood work help complete the picture.

How to Hold On to Muscle During Weight Loss

Most people on a weight loss program watch one thing: the scale. What matters more is which kind of weight is leaving. GLP-1 medications are effective at bringing weight down, but they do not choose fat over muscle on their own.

Why Muscle Gets Lost

Fast weight loss always takes some lean tissue along with fat. Studies of GLP-1 medications show that lean mass can account for a sizable part of the total, most of all when food intake drops sharply and nothing is done to defend muscle. Reduced appetite is how these medications work. It is also why many patients end up eating too little protein without noticing.

What Losing It Costs You

Muscle uses calories around the clock. Less muscle means a slower resting metabolism, which makes it easier to regain weight and harder to lose it the next time. Day-to-day function suffers as well. Strength, steadiness on your feet, bone density, and independence in later life all depend on keeping muscle.

Two Things That Protect It

Getting enough protein and doing resistance exercise two to three times a week are the best-supported ways to preserve muscle. Skip either one and more of your weight loss is likely to come from lean tissue. A provider can set your protein target according to your body weight and stage of treatment, so you are not relying on a generic number.

Check, Don’t Assume

The scale reports a total and nothing more. Losing ten pounds of fat and losing five pounds of fat plus five of muscle look identical on it, yet they need very different responses. Recheck your lean mass regularly during treatment, and bring those results along with your weight to each follow-up.

Lose Weight Without Losing Muscle

A medically supervised program gives you a protein target, a resistance training routine, and regular body composition tracking. That way the pounds you lose are the ones you set out to lose.
