Thyroid Diseases and Symptoms
Thyroid Diseases, Symptoms, Signs and Treatments
The thyroid gland is susceptible to a plethora of afflictions later on in life and is a rather common occurrence. Several thyroid diseases affect it’s ability to produce hormones; many of which manifest themselves with a unique set of symptoms. Hereditary disorders and genetic dispositions can cause the thyroid to falter. To best understand thyroid diseases and the signs, it’s paramount to recognize the symptoms relative to each condition:
Goiter is the term given to the growth of nodules on the thyroid. These nodules create tenderness and inflammation of the thyroid. The symptoms related to goiter involve visible swelling of the neck, tightness in the throat, coughing and hoarseness, and lastly, difficulty swallowing and breathing.
Graves Disease is very similar to goiter but has more to do with the overall swelling of the thyroid itself, than just nodular growths. The swelling of the thyroid has ramifications towards the overproduction of thyroid hormones, which is one of the most leading causes of hyperthyroidism. The distinguishing characteristics of Graves disease are as follows: females are disproportionately more affected, eye issues can arise, where the ocular muscles become inflamed and swollen giving the eyeball a red, protruding appearance, and lastly, but more rarely, the skin around the shins become lumpy and red.
Hyperthyroidism
As mentioned earlier, it shares many of the same symptoms of Graves Disease. People affected with an overactive thyroid commonly experience unintended weight loss (regularly eating yet losing weight), tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), nervousness, anxiety, tremors, sweating, changes in menstrual patterns, heat intolerance, frequent bowel movements, muscle fatigue, difficulty sleeping, etc.,
Hashimoto thyroiditis is the inflammation of the thyroid gland. This hereditarily passed on disease, again, affects more women than men. People of all ages can experience thyroiditis, but it’s more commonly found in older people. If left untreated, and with enough accrued cellular damage to the thyroid, symptoms of hypothyroidism manifest. Thyroid diseases, specifically, thyroiditis is harder to identify as the condition progresses unnoticed slowly over long periods until hypothyroidism develops.
Hypothyroidism
This is the opposite of hyperthyroidism where the thyroid is inadequately producing essential hormones. Without thyroid hormones, affected people experience fatigue, cold sensitivity, dry skin, constipation, puffiness, hoarseness, muscle tenderness, heavier or irregular menstrual periods, hair thinning, depression, and impaired memory can manifest
Thyroid Cancer is one of the more treatable cancers, yet success rates are contingent on which of the four types and stages the tumor was discovered. It’s crucial to catch cancer earlier on, although, in its earliest stages, the cancer is almost asymptomatic until enough time has passed. Be wary of neck and throat pain, neck lumps, vocal changes, and persistent coughs.
